Day/Night Diary
Environmental installation, New Hampshire studio at MacDowell Colony, 1988
Every surface of the studio is painted in dappled tones from black to white, reflecting the light from the woods outside. Tall panels of plexiglass are hung from ceiing to floor, interspersed with panels of mosquito screening that in the light conditions are scarcely visible in themselves but pick up shadows or thicken the light. The work is completed by the viewer, who finds herself reflected in the panels, no more substantial than the light or trees, as all becomes interiorised and the passing of time, as light, becomes palpable.
