Her 1001 Nights
Stage set for writer/choregrapher Marjorie Gamso at Marymount Manhattan Theatre, New York City, 1988. Collaborative lighting design with Pat Dignan.
The audience views the performance through a black proscenium scrim on which are projected images. This dematerialises the dancers, who move between panels of mosquito screening which hold further projections. As in the original 1001 Nights, each segment of text and dance is repeated, and with each repetition a further segment is added. So with the lighting, which starts pale and colourless and deepens into rich, dark tones as the work progresses, each segment opening up like an eye and closing down to darkness again.
